The global art community is still in a mood for celebration, thanks to the Nigerian artist, Oresegun Olumide, whose stunning works literally broke the Internet on Wednesday and once again drew the attention of the rest of the world to the quality of art produced on this side of the globe.
Before now, little was known about 35-year-old Olumide who majored in Fine Art at the Yaba College of Technology, famous for its art tradition and for producing some of the most influential artists that the modern world has ever known.
In a recent interview granted to an online newspaper based in the United States, the artist-turned celebrity drops a hint that his journey to artistic excellence started from the age of four. Unlike most of his peers, he was reserved, preferring at that tender age to immerse himself in drawing than playing hide-and-seek around his neighbourhood.
“In my childhood, I didn’t mingle with my friends or crowd. I only had two friends. When my childhood friends were riding their bicycles and playing about, I would start drawing and painting, at the age of four years. I have always loved drawing and painting. I never lost focus or got carried away by the vicissitudes of life. I enjoyed drawing from my childhood,” he told the Naija Standard.
Inspired by his immediate environment and the people living around him, whose activities deeply influenced his choice of themes, Olumide eventually started producing art works professionally in 2005. And his chosen medium was oil on canvas.
In the same interview, he describes oil on canvas as his “life” and his passion for painting as the “love” of his life. To set himself apart from other aspiring artists, the artist made an all-important decision to throw all that he had; his creative energy inclusive, into building a successful career as a visual artist. He was prepared to put in long hours, even weeks and months, at the studio to achieve this.
Only two days ago, a CNN report described Olumide’s works as hyper realistic. Others, no less appreciative of his creative ingenuity, have marveled at the quality of his paintings and his attention to details. Also, they consider his use of water, which is the central theme in most of his works, to be the hallmark of a master painter.
Such is the attractiveness of Olumide’s paintings that in less than 48 hours they had recorded a massive following on social media, attracting over 18,000 fans on Instagram, about 25,000 shares on Facebook and over 12,000 followers on Twitter. By dint of hard work, the artist has, no doubt, shown that some dreams can come true.
Olumide’s works certainly reflect the amount of effort that he has put into creating them. Even art critics did not mince words when they described his paintings as life-like and extraordinarily captivating.
